Why Is AMBULANCE Written Upside Down in Front of the Trucks?

Sat, 30 Apr 2022 Source: Michael Djan

Have you ever wondered the reason why most ambulance trucks in the country and also most parts of the world have an upside down writing and spelling of 'Ambulance' in front of the trucks?

Here is the explanation;

The word "Ambulance" is written in reverse because the driver in front of the ambulance can see the words spelt correctly in his rear view mirror. Quickly, this driver blocking the ambulance passageway can quickly identify that the vehicle behind him is an ambulance and react by giving way.

The scientific term is known as lateral inversion. Lateral inversion creates the mirror image we see.

Road courtesy: Most often drivers in such situations react by giving way – filtering out and merging into a slower moving lane.

NB: The first letter opposite “E” becomes the last letter “E” in the correct direction; the last letter “A” becomes the first letter “A”.

For instance, an ambulance is supposed to be spelt as 'AMBULANCE' in front of the trucks but it is written us 'ECNALUNMA'. The side mirrors of cars are designed in such a way that it converts the "ECNALUNMA" to "AMBULANCE".
