Another Engineering Wonder: The hanging pillar

Fri, 23 Dec 2022 Source: Ras Tbc Ofoe

This pillar belongs to the 16th century Veerabhadra temple, also known as Lepakshi temple (India).

Built in the typical style of Vijayanagara architecture, the temple features many exquisite sculptures and hundreds of paintings.

However, Veerabhadra temple is famed for another engineering wonder: the so-called "hanging pillar".

This pillar hangs from the ceiling and its base hardly touches the ground which allows thin objects to pass from one side to another. It's now a tribute to the engineering genius of ancient and medieval India’s temple builders.

However, it is slightly dislodged from its original position — it is said that during the British era, a British engineer tried to move it in an unsuccessful attempt to uncover the secret of its support. Needless to add, neither the British engineer nor anyone after him has been able to explain the mystery of how the hanging pillar at the Lepakshi temple was crafted.
