For the first time in Ghana's history, a non-political organisation booed a sitting president, signalling that citizens had lost faith in Ghana's current president and his government.

This does not appear to be a positive signal for Ghana's democracy, and the president and his party must enhance their effectiveness.

The Global Citizen Festival performance conducted yesterday at Back Star Square, Accra, drew a sizable crowd. It features performers from the diaspora and also functions as a tourist attraction.

Its goal and objective are to return back the people whose magnificent lands were captured during colonisation so that they can reconnect with their ancestral origins.

It was invited to give a speech by the country's first president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. A 19-minute video circulating on social media shows the audience booing and shutting up at the president during his speech, chanting "Away, Away." And you may have heard the president respond in Twi, stating, "The entire world is in Ghana today."

However, the claim was reinstated, and the night resumed with performances by a Ghanaian UK rapper goes by the stage name Stormzy, and America's r&b singer Usher, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Vic Mensa, Chance The Rapper, Kwesi Author, Yaw Tog, and others.
