The theft of railway tracks worth millions of Ghana cedis at various locations across the country continues to be a cause for concern at a time when the country is attempting to revitalize the railway system and construct new tracks.
Occasionally, videos emerge on social media featuring suspects transporting stolen music.
Recent reports indicated that 50 kilometers of railway tracks were stolen across the nation, causing an estimated $250 million in damage.
The rails were seized from Ejisu, Konongo, Juaso, Obuasi-Dunkwa-Prestea, Akrokerri, Kaasi, Asafo, and Asawase railway lines.
In March 2023, a chief from Twifo Anyinase in the Twifo Praso region of the Central Region was detained along with several others for allegedly stealing railroad tracks.
Interestingly, according to the authorities, the leader of the thieving gang was the chief who, through the Community Information Centers, has always condemned the theft of railway lines and warned youth and scrap dealers not to steal railway tracks.
