At Adum, Tears And Gnashing Of Teeth

Thu, 27 Apr 2023 Source: Alby News Ghana

The female with a firearm wound. Through her ivory temple was sprinkled... With fresh crimson tears, he observes her final breaths before he extracts life from her abandoned body.

Isobel G.

Adum, Asafo, Bantama, and AshTown were the four locations in Kumasi where "boys will be boys" during our adolescence — these were our golden years, our heyday.

There was no need for transportation. We would travel from Asafo to Adum or AshTown, while others would "criss-cross" and return home to doze off. Each family would jealously protect their women, but if you were clever enough to snag one, you would be called "akonta" and placed in their "good books."

This is how we were able to acquire our better half from Adum. Our father-in-law's name was Oheneba Boakye Dankwa, and on the day of the 'knocking,' he took a sip of the Schnapps and gave us the remainder to denote an acceptable relationship.

We were both Bretuo clan members. The location was the residence of the Akyempem hene, who was the son of Otumfuo Prempeh I who had returned from exile in Seychelles.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, would visit Akyeremade and go to the Baamu to pray in the morning whenever there was an Akwasidae (and sometimes Awukudae) to pray to the ancestral spirits and later recline in state in the house to receive homage and settle disputes, just as his predecessors had done.

The women (some in their sixties and seventies) at Adum referred to themselves as "Adum girls"; they were very attractive and well-groomed. Just across from the harems were dwellings inhabited by Nigerian prostitutes (mostly Itsekiris and Ibos) and their Ghanaian counterparts (Krobos and Ewes, with a few Bonos, Nzemas, and Asantes) who exchanged their bodies for two shillings (2-2).

Victoria Dapah, 27-years-old, a.k.a. MaaAdwoa, had a difficult childhood; her mother died when she was very young, and she was raised by her auntie, the sister of her late mother, Afia Kaya; she was very beautiful, and her grandmother, Maame Sakyiwaa, took great care to raise her.

She was a diligent student who studied manicure, pedicure, and related positions in the fashion industry. She supplemented her income by establishing a bar close to her home that was open until 9:30 p.m. She would provide us, Dr. Prempeh, Nana Osei, Owusu-Ansah, and Nana Adusei with plastic chairs from her drinking location whenever Otumfuo visited.

She met a man from Bantama, and their relationship produced Maame Serwaa (a.k.a. Agudee), who is now almost three years old. Krakye moved to the United States and considered bringing her with him. Inspector Ahmed Twumasi of SWAT arrived to "cross her" just as she was making travel arrangements.

Twumasi was never liked by Maa Adwoa's siblings because he was not "her size," and she desired to end the 4-month-old relationship. His offensive behavior and domineering attitude irritated her.

He was constantly distrustful of Maa Adwoa and constantly accused her of infidelity.

He once visited Maa Adwoa's home, and when her brother told him she was taking a bath, he entered the restroom to verify her brother's explanation.

On the evening of Thursday, April 23, she accepted the invitation of a woman friend (Eunice) and left the house, despite the protests of her older brother, Emmanuel Oppong, who constantly monitored his sister's movements.

Her only justification was that she was visiting a neighboring acquaintance and would return immediately. Then, pa-pa-pa-pa. Since it was not Christmas, "Knock-out" was ruled out. Curious neighbors emerged from their homes to witness the event. Maa Adwoa had been shot in the cranium, heart, and abdomen. In addition, the tormentor kicked the corpse as it lay lifeless. Callousness? Insensitivity?

After committing the heinous crime, the mufti-clad villain boarded an auto rickshaw (Pragya) and raced away. Fortunately for Maa Adowa's family, one of the stores near Dufie Towers had a CCTV camera that captured the incident. In addition, those nearby heard her pleading, "Tycoon, don't kill me; Tycoon, don't kill me." The petitions, however, fell on deaf ears. Unbelievable!

Maa Adowa was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital but was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

On Tuesday, April 25th, the perpetrator was apprehended and brought before the Asokore Mampong District Court, where His Worship Samuel Buabin Quansah presided over the committal hearing. The police prosecutor, ACP Blagogee, read the allegations, but the suspect's plea was not taken.

Inspector Twumasi claimed in his statement that Maa Adwoa was his fiancée; she owed him Gh5,000 and he wanted to collect it, but Maa Adwoa was uncooperative.

The Adum boys pose numerous questions: Adumpaanie (Is this the same Adum we once knew? Boxers like Asebi-Boakye J.J.Kani so nie). What offense did MaaAdwoa commit for her life to be so abruptly and cruelly cut short? The guys are agitated, spewing venom while remaining respectful.

They recognize that they cannot take the law into their own hands, but they still want justice to be served! And they have the support and endorsement of everyone associated with Adum. The parents of Krakye cannot believe that their future daughter-in-law would abandon them under such dire circumstances. All of you, Reverend Kyei Maame Sarpong... Due, due ne amane-hunu.

When one commits homicide, he receives the death penalty. Section 46 of the Criminal Offenses Act (Act 29) states, "Anyone who commits murder is subject to the death penalty." And Section 47 states: Whoever intentionally causes the death of another by any unlawful means is culpable of murder, unless his crime is reduced to manslaughter due to such extreme provocation or other partial excuse as described in Section 52.

The defendant is scheduled to reappear in court on 30 May 2023. We are observing and awaiting developments. A man in his early forties who is married and has children commits homicide... As attorneys, we are aware that the case is pending. We will not comment, but instead pause.
