Former Okaikwei North Member of Parliament (MP) Fuseini Issah has revealed that the La General Hospital was demolished because it was a "death trap."

He explained on Adom TV's Badwam that the structure had become unstable due to its proximity to the water.

"La General Hospital was constructed on the coast. Built near the water, structures have a finite lifespan. When the structure was demolished, it was a death trap. Some of the structures were subsiding, and some of the iron rods had corroded.

With the onset of the global economic crisis, funding for the new undertaking became a problem. We were unwilling to wait for the worst to occur.

We will shortly construct an ultramodern hospital for the people.

As a result of the facility's deteriorating condition, the La General Hospital was shut down by the government in March 2020 to make space for reconstruction.

Eventually, the building was demolished in preparation for the planned renovation, which would enhance healthcare services for local residents.

Prior to its destruction, the hospital served patients from Osu, La, Teshie, and other coastal Accra neighborhoods.

On August 10, 2020, the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will turn the first sod for the €68 million La General Hospital Redevelopment Project.

Two years later, however, an inspection by members of the Minority Caucus revealed that the ground had become overgrown with vegetation.

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, announced that the reconstruction of the La General Hospital will begin on March 14, 2022, citing Covid-19 as the reason for the delay.

Meanwhile, the ranking member of the Health Committee of the Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, alleged that the government misapplied the €68 million allocated for the reconstruction of the La General Hospital, resulting in the delay.

Dr. Nsiah Asare, Presidential Advisor on Health, explained that construction work on the demolished hospital has been delayed because materials for the project have yet to arrive in Ghana, following a month of protests by residents of the La community against the abandoned project.
