Accra Hearts of Oak were victorious in an arduous 1-0 game against their long-standing opponents, Asante Kotoko, at the 2023 President’s Cup, which took place on Sunday afternoon in Accra.

President Akufo-Addo was present to witness the game, which also served as a league encounter between the two teams.

The match kicked off at an intense pace, with both sides exchanging attacks in the opening 15 minutes. Asante Kotoko almost took the lead through Stephen Mukwala, but his one-on-one opportunity was squandered when he blasted the ball over the bar.

Shortly after, Accra Hearts of Oak had a chance of their own when Benjamin Yorke found himself in a promising position, but his attempt was denied by a superb save from Danlad Ibrahim.

The first half-hour of the game saw fewer opportunities as both teams settled into the match. However, the game was not without its moments of controversy, as a Richmond Ayi tackle on Mukwala sparked a melee among the players. Yorke’s goal was also disallowed for offside.

The game came to life just before halftime when Konadu Yiadom scored a fantastic header from a Linda Mtange set-piece to give Accra Hearts of Oak the lead.

In the second half, Asante Kotoko pushed for an equalizer, dominating possession and creating chances. However, they were unable to convert their opportunities into goals. Accra Hearts of Oak defended resolutely and tried to catch their opponents on the counter-attack but failed to convert any of their chances.

As the game entered its final moments, Sherif Mohammed’s header hit the crossbar and bounced back into play, denying Asante Kotoko a late equalizer. In the end, the Phobians held on to their lead and secured their sixth President’s Cup title and their second league win of the season, moving up to fourth on the league table.
