Kidney Disease Foods And Drinks That Can Harm The Kidney If Taken Too Much

Mon, 20 Feb 2023 Source: Alby News Ghana

If you have kidney disease, it's best to stay away from foods high in potassium and carbonated drinks. Healthline reports that they may raise blood pressure and cause digestive issues. This is because the kidneys have to work harder to filter blood and eliminate waste after consuming these foods.

Because the kidneys' ability to filter waste products declines with age, adults with certain types of kidney problems should limit their intake of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus, among others.

01. Packaged and canned foods

Drying, salting, curing, and smoking meats are common preparation methods for this type of food, but these processes strip the meat of its healthy nutrients and leave behind only the unhealthy carbs. Consuming them on a regular basis can damage your kidneys due to the high sodium content.

02 Bottles of Black Soda

Commonly used in soft drinks are dark-colored, high-phosphorous sodas that typically contain 90-180 mg of soda per 350 ml. As a diabetic, you can't have any more phosphorous than this. Dark sodas not only affect your diet, but also increase your risk of heart disease and weak bones.

03. Potassium-rich fruits

Fruit has a reputation for being healthy and nutritious, but it can pose health risks for people with diabetes and kidney disease. Avocados, apricots, kiwis, oranges, and bananas are among the fruits that should be avoided by those with these conditions because of their high sugar content or high potassium content.

But if your doctor says it's okay, you can have a few pieces of fruit from this list every day because it contains other nutrients that may help kidney patients.

Keep in mind that you can get the same health benefits from eating grapes, pineapple, mango, or apples instead.

04. Dried Fruits

Due to its high sugar content and mineral content (including potassium), its water is highly prized. As a result, you shouldn't take it. Dry fruits in particular should be avoided by diabetics due to the high concentration of quickly absorbed sugar in these foods.

05. Lentils and beans

Due to the high levels of phosphorous and sodium they contain, even a slight excess of these elements can cause serious issues. Most medical professionals agree that eating lentils on occasion won't hurt those with these conditions and will keep vital nutrients available.

Since the sodium content of lentils and beans can be easily reduced by 40-60%, they should be prepared carefully before being given to kidney patients. To that end, keep in mind that some research has linked eating legumes, whole grains, and nuts to a lower risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

06. fruit juices

Fruit juices should be regulated for diabetics but not outright banned. The reason for this is that many commercially available fruit juices contain a number of additives and sugars that can raise blood sugar levels and cause health problems. Instead of buying store-bought juice, try making your own at home and enjoying the health benefits of fresh fruit without the added sugar.
