MATCH REPORT: Hearts of Oak woes deepened by Great Olympics in Ga Mashie Derby Featured

A second half penalty scored by Samuel Ashie Quaye aided Great Olympics to record a slim victory over Hearts of Oak in the Ga Mashie Derby at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Great Olympics maintained their dominance in the derby with a 1-0 win over Hearts of Oak in the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League match-week 19 game on Wednesday evening.

The early minutes of the game was dominated by Slavko Matic's charges but none of their efforts earned them a goal against Great Olympics.

Congolese international Linda Mtange tried his luck on the 19th minute with an audacious strike which goalkeeper Benjamin Asare struggled to save it for the first time.

Great Olympics were resolute at the back to deal with the inroads from the Hearts of Oak upfront trio of Albert Dieudonne Eonde, Suraj Seidu and Enoch Asubonteng.

On the 35th minute, Asubonteng came close to register his name on the score sheet with a low-cross delivered by Linda Mtange but his strike went over the bar.

Great Olympics warmed themselves into the game with an impressive performance in the last ten minutes of the game as Micheal Osei and Christopher Nettey had goal glaring opportunities to put the ‘Oly Dade’ lads ahead but their attempts went futile.

The first half of the entertaining fixture ended in a 0-0 draw at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Five minutes after the break, Great Olympics took the lead via a spot-kick awarded them when Michael Osei was fouled in the box by Jeordon Otanga Mvouo.

Former Ghana U20 star Samuel Ashie Quaye elected himself to brilliantly convert the spot-kick firmly into the back of Richmond Ayi's net to hand Great Olympics a 1-0 lead on the 51st minute of the game.

On the 57th minute, Albert Dieudonne Eonde came close to level the score for Hearts of Oak but his strike missed the post by a whisker.

Hearts of Oak introduced Benjamin Yorke, Victor Aidoo, Yassan Ouatching and Isaac Mensah with the aim of bolstering their attack for the equalizer but it yielded no input for the visitors.

Great Olympics were reduced to ten men on the 87th minute when Ebenezer Sekyere was shown the second yellow card for time wasting.

Hearts of Oak fought hard in the dying embers of the game but their efforts couldn't earn them a goal to at least secure a point, making it a back-to-back defeat after a home loss to Aduana Stars last weekend.
