Marseille fans rush back into stadium after 90+6 equaliser - but it ends in heartbreak

Swathes of Marseille supporters were seen sprinting back towards the stadium after missing their team's injury-time equaliser - but it all ended in heartbreak

Fans were seen racing back towards the stadium after hearing a 96th-minute goal go in

Several dozen Marseille fans who left a match early were spotted racing back into the stadium after realising they'd just scored a 96th-minute equaliser.

The Ligue 1 giants were taking on second tier side Annecy in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France at Marseille's famed Orange Velodrome, but found themselves trailing as the match ticked over into stoppage time.

A number of frustrated supporters tried to beat the traffic and duck out early, but regretted it big time after hearing the stadium erupt as they walked through the exits.

"This is exactly why you always stay to the final whistle," one Twitter user said in response to the footage, while a second added: "I’m not sure how anyone could leave a football game early. You pay for the full experience, so stay for the full experience. Enjoy every up and down."

Most of the fans ran back in to catch the rest of the game, which headed to extra time, but they needn't have as it all ended in heartbreak, with minnows Annecy eventually triumphing on penalties.

"It was all in vain then I guess haha," one social media user gloated. Another wrote: "Must be gutting to miss the one big moment of the game, run back in and see your team lose all over again lol."

The defeat serves as a massive let down for Marseille who, after knocking PSG out in the previous round, were considered tournament favourites.

The south coast club, whose squad features the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Dimitri Payet, Matteo Guendouzi and, Eric Bailly (on loan from Manchester United), are eight points behind the league-leading Parisians in Ligue 1 - who will become the most successful side in the competition's history if they successfully defend the championship this season.

Marseille have only won the league once in the last 30 years, but their record of 10 titles is still a record, held jointly with PSG and Saint Étienne. Enjoy it while it lasts, mes amis.
