The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retreated after clearing 14 constituencies in Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, and Ashanti regions for the resumption of parliamentary primaries that were initially suspended.

At its meeting on April 25, 2023, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party reversed its decision to enable those constituencies to participate in the internal election to select candidates for the affected areas.

Barbra Serwaa Asamoah, NDC Deputy General Secretary in charge of Finance Administration, stated in a statement that this was done to ensure a seamless process for the party's nationwide presidential and parliamentary primaries.

The statement indicated that primaries for the presidency would be conducted in all constituencies except Manhia South in Kumasi.

In contrast, no parliamentary primaries would be held in Akwatia, Ayensuano, Afram Plains South, Lower West Akim, Adansi Asokwa, Mampong, Ayawaso West Wuogon, Odododiodoo, Amenfi East, Gomoa Central, Akontombra, Tano North, Manhyia South, Assin North, and Efutu.

FEC is working diligently to ensure that issues plaguing the affected constituencies are resolved, and the committee will declare a new date for the primaries in due course, according to the statement.

Earlier Disposal

On April 19, 2023, the FEC approved certain constituencies, including Ayawaso Central, Amasaman, Afram Plains South, Ayensuano, Offinso North, Ahafo Ano North, Sekyere Afram Plains, Ahafo Ano South West, Bosome Freho, Asante Akim Central, Manso Adubia, Manhyia South, Subin, and Fomena.

After a series of engagements and preparatory work, the FEC stated that it was confident that issues that had previously plagued the constituencies had been largely addressed.

In a statement issued and signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC Secretariat directed all Regional Chairmen in the affected regions to put measures in place for members to compete in the upcoming primaries in the aforementioned districts.

"Regional Chairmen are required to implement the necessary mechanisms to guarantee that the primaries are held as scheduled on May 13, 2023. Therefore, the opening of nominations and other activities should be expedited to reach the May 13, 2023 deadline," the statement stated.

It added, "Where challenges exist, the Regional Chairman should notify us immediately."

It was determined that the FEC would work diligently to ensure that all remaining constituencies are addressed in the second half of the year.
