Only An Internal Contest (1)

Only a Competition Within the Organisation Only a Competition Within the Organisation

Some NPP supporters who have good intentions are concerned about the statements made by certain candidates for the position of party flagbearer and their supporters. Observers are left wondering whether or not the leadership of the party established any ground rules as a result of their behaviour.

It seems as though the candidates are already in the campaign mode for the general election in 2024, but they seem to have forgotten that the primaries are strictly internal concerns that need to be handled as if the party were one large family.

Once more, we are left to wonder whether the contenders and, by implication, the leadership of the NPP have taken away any valuable takeaways from the primary elections in 2007 in which 17 different personalities competed. We bring to the attention of the NPP the age-old proverb that states those who fail to take lessons from the past are destined for failure. If they have refused to see the harm that their actions are likely to inflict the party, we ask them to take a step back and reflect on their messages so far to determine whether or not they truly trust in the "Breaking the 8" motto or if it is merely sloganeering. If they have refused to see the harm that their actions are likely to bring the party, we urge them to step back and reflect on their messaging so far.

We as a people have, on occasion, decried the brevity of the four-year mandate of the President under the Fourth Republican Constitution, and we have not missed an opportunity to ask for a reexamination of the provision in order to provide the government with a sufficient amount of room in which to carry out its policies and programmes.

Therefore, the individual who came up with the idea of "Breaking the 8" as a solution to this problem deserves praise for coming up with such an original idea as a solution to this problem.

However, despite the fact that all of the hopefuls and the majority of the supporters have bought into the campaign theme, their actions appear to be derailing efforts that are being made to win the general elections in 2024. This is an ironic aspect of the current situation that is plaguing the NPP. Some of these contenders who are content with where they are in their careers do not give a hoot if the party is once again in the opposition, as was the case in 2008.

Even the discomfort of a hung Parliament and the challenges it provides for the Akufo-Addo government to carry out its mandate are lost on many members of the party, especially those who have been elected to lead the party. These potential candidates appear to have forgotten that the activity at hand is an internal one that affords them the chance to view themselves in the mirror.

At this point, a few of the competitors have gone over the deep end and have chosen the counterproductive strategy of disparaging their rivals in order to gain an advantage. We make it abundantly apparent to them that making personal attacks against others would not help them win the argument; rather, the "magic wand" in their hands is to assist the party in maintaining its majority in Parliament and retaining
