Durban’s Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court is hearing arguments from the state and the defense in a case of femicide. A 36-year-old woman’s boyfriend is accused of killing her because she refused to have more sex with him.
Zwakele Sphephelo Mgobhozi, who is 25 years old, is accused of killing Precious Pinky Yeni in 2021. In December 2021, he is said to have cut the woman’s throat outside of her home in Amaoti.
After the arguments on Wednesday, a decision is also likely to be made.
It is said that the night before the murder, the couple drank together and later at Yeni’s family home, which they shared with the family of the person who was killed. It is said that Mgobhozi forced Yeni to have sex.
When Mgobhozi asked for more sex after they had already had four rounds, they got into an argument.
It is said that Yeni’s sister Promise tried to stop the fight while they were all still inside the house after hearing about it.
The state says that Mgobhozi went outside and got an iron garden rake. When he came back inside, he hit Yeni over the head with the rake, which made her run outside.
Mgobhozi is said to have chased her and tried to hit her again with the rake when they got outside, but she used her arm to block the blow and ran away.
It is said that Mgobhozi then got a knife and ran after her. When he caught up to her, he stabbed her in the back of the neck and then cut her throat.
Mgobhozi has pleaded not guilty, so he has been locked up in jail since January 2022, when he was denied bail.
The victim impact statement of Promise, who saw her sister get killed, is expected to be read out in arguments.
Mgobhozi didn’t have a job, so the sisters let him live with them. Before the murder, he had been living there for about two months.
They have a 2-year-old child together. His mother was killed when he was 2 years old.
