Raphael Dwamena was a Ghanaian professional footballer who played as a striker for a number of different teams as well as the Ghana national team. During his career, he won multiple awards.

It was notably well recognised for his prolific scoring ability in the leagues of Switzerland and Austria where he played.

At Austria Lustenau, he played in 20 games and scored 18 goals. At FC Zurich1, he played in 51 games and scored 21 goals.

In addition, he competed for Ghana in nine matches at the international level and scored two goals2. The 11th of November, 2023 was the unfortunate day he departed away.

Dwamena passed out on the pitch on 11 November 2023, during the 23rd minute of the first half of the round 13 match between Egnatia and Partizani in the Kategoria Superiore. The match was between Egnatia and Partizani.

While being transported to Kavaj Hospital, he experienced a heart arrest and passed away.

Local media sources focused on the player's previous cardiac difficulties, including one game in 2021 with Austria's Blau-Veis Linz when he was hospitalised with heart problems. The Albanian federation did not provide any specifics regarding a likely cause, but they did comment on the player's history of heart problems.

In 2017, Dwamena was informed that she had a heart problem that required treatment.

It was in January of 2020 while he was playing for Levante UD that he underwent surgery to have an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) placed. This allowed his club to monitor his heart during games while he was playing for them.

In October of 2020, the ICD revealed values that were judged to be excessive, and as a direct consequence of this, his club at the time, Vejle Boldklub, removed him from any activity involving the squad.

In October 2021, during the first half of an Austrian Cup match between Blau-Weiss Linz and Hartberg, Dwamena fainted on the pitch and was shocked by the ICD before being swiftly stabilised. The match was being played for the Austrian Cup.

What exactly happened to Raphael Dwamena?

Born in Nkawkaw, which is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Raphael Dwamena was a member of the Red Bull Ghana developing programme, where he both played and trained.

In 2013, Dwamena was voted the event's Best Player after leading the RB Ghana U17 team to a silver medal performance. The squad also won the competition.

Dwamena and his teammate David Atanga spent one week on trial with FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria before making their way back to Ghana. Dwamena's trip to Austria was preceded by a trip to Ghana.

In January of 2014, Dwamena became a member of the Salzburg youth team, and almost immediately made an impression on the U18 squad.

In the competition he participated in during the month of June, he scored seven goals in just four games. Despite coming in third place overall, Salzburg was awarded the Golden Shoe.

Raphael Dwamena kicked off his professional football career by participating in Red Bull Ghana's youth football training programme.

In 2014, he made the move to Austria and signed with Red Bull Salzburg. After a year with the club, he was loaned out to FC Liefering, a farm team that competes in the second level.

During the 2016–17 season, he played for FC Zurich and scored 12 goals in 18 matches, which contributed to the team's victory in the Swiss Challenge League and their promotion to the Swiss Super League.

In June of 2017, he made his first appearance for the Ghana national team, which resulted in a 5–0 victory over Ethiopia in the qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He scored two goals in that match.

After agreeing to terms with Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2017, the deal was contingent on a successful medical examination; however, he was unable to pass the examination due to a cardiac problem.

In the 2017–18 season, he scored 13 goals for FC Zurich in 32 appearances, which contributed to the team's fourth-place finish in the Swiss Super League and allowed them to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. His return to the club occurred in January of 2018.

In August of 2018, he signed with the Spanish club Levante, however his time there was marred by injuries and he did not get much playing time. During his two seasons with Levante, he played in a total of 17 matches but only managed to score once.

In September of 2020, he was loaned out to the Danish team Vejle Boldklub. During the 2020–21 season, he played in 16 matches for Vejle Boldklub and scored three goals, which helped the club avoid relegation from the Danish Superliga.

In January of 2023, he made the move to the Albanian club KF Egnatia, where he has already contributed four goals in 10 matches played throughout the 2022–23 season.
