Ghana is almost done approving a natural supplement to help with COVID-19 treatment.

The SARS-COV-2 virus has been shown to be at least 90% effective against a total of 11 items being studied by the Center for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR) at Mampong in the Eastern Region for potential treatment of the disease. "Immunim," a previous immune booster medication, has demonstrated this efficacy.

The herbal medicine is anticipated to be Ghana's first herbal medication to treat COVID-19, pending the conclusion of pre-clinical and clinical testing.

When the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, paid a courtesy visit to the management of CPMR yesterday to become familiar with their activities, Dr. Kofi Donkor, the Center's Director of Research and Innovation, informed the media of this.

The Minister also had the chance to dedicate an extended clinic building in Dr. Oku Ampofo's honor, the center's original director, so that the general public may get traditional and herbal medical care.

Preclinical testing should be finished within the next two months, after which clinical trials, which test the pharmaceuticals on humans, can start. If these trials are successful, we will be able to utilize the drugs to treat COVID-19, according to Dr. Donkor.

The director claims that 28 of the 31 individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 and were given the herbal medication have since tested negative.

He said, "The herbal product presents a useful option for the treatment of COVID-19 since it can remove the virus within two weeks.

The Minister praised the center's creativity, calling it remarkable and a step toward improving the country's access to high-quality alternative healthcare.

He said that the clinic's growth demonstrated the country's rising interest in herbal treatment and that the government was committed to fostering the growth of the industry.

"This is a process, and we're dedicated to supporting more study into traditional and herbal medicine for use locally and even export. several of the COVID-19 monies have already been utilized to support the events here, and several people have also come with their own funds.

We are willing to direct some money here to support their activities whenever we have enough, he said.

The CPMR's Executive Director, Professor Alex Asase, expressed the organization's commitment to advancing study into the application of plant medicine to address the nation's healthcare needs.

There are now 26 COVID-19 users active in the nation.

The rest are located in the Greater Accra Region, with only one active case in the Western North Region.

The COVID-19 dashboard for the Ghana Health Service (GHS) shows that none of the active cases are in a critical or serious condition as of the previous update on April 13, 2023.

Nearly 25 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have now been given throughout the nation, and 10 million people are now totally protected.
