As part of his administration's efforts to address the country's internal security agency's housing needs, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will today commission 312 housing units for the Ghana Police Service.

Following the opening of opulent homes in Kumasi for Court of Appeal Judges and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the accommodation facility will be yet another significant initiative carried out by the Akufo-Addo administration.

Police chiefs are anticipated to attend the inauguration ceremony, along with Ministers of Lands and Natural Resources and the Interior, Messrs. Samuel A. Jinapor and Ambrose Dery, respectively.

The housing project being built by Unique Development Company is the result of a land swap deal involving the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Ministry of the Interior, Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, and the private developer.

The project's initial phase, which includes 312 housing units as well as a fully equipped clinic, a school building for JHS and Primary, a police mobile maintenance unit, a police station, a fuel depot, and a garage, will significantly help the police with their housing needs.

There will be the building of 192 dwelling units during the second phase, bringing the overall number to 504 housing units.

When the 504-Accommodation facility is finished, it will provide housing units with one or two bedrooms for the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Meteorological Agency, Civil Aviation, and Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA), among other agencies.

The agreement was reached, according to Mr. Benito Owusu-Bio, a deputy minister for lands and natural resources, during an inspection tour, when the government realized that the Police Service needed housing immediately. This realization was in line with the government's plan to construct modern barracks for the security services, whose numbers were growing by the day.

He said that while work on the project had started in 2020, it had been hampered and nearly terminated by the COVID-19 epidemic.

According to the Deputy Minister, the project also includes a 10-unit, 2-bedroom housing complex with offices, canteens, and a police station to safeguard the safety of the Service's engineering and mechanic department.

Mr. Owusu-Bio emphasized that in order to make room for the development of the Jubilee City Project, the project also transferred the residents of the Ghana Airport Company and the Meteorological Service to Jubilee Enclave.
