Why NPP requested that Mahama and Asiedu Nketiah be detained by the police

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), in an effort to appear innocent, has petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Service to arrest former president John Mahama after the Legal Affairs Department of the opposition NDC petitioned the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, regarding a comment made by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

At a party rally last weekend, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong declared that the NPP will never cede power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Acheampong asserted that the NPP will use force to maintain power in the general election of 2024, and more than a quarter of NDC MPs endorsed his ministerial permission.

Due to the part he played in the shooting and maiming of numerous Ghanaians during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections in 2019, his remark has drawn widespread condemnation from security analysts and some civil society organizations in the nation. Many have called for his arrest.

The NPP wants the police to detain NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah for uttering treasonous words as well. The NPP has recently suffered from public unpopularity due to the implementation of several nuisance taxes, and it wants to seem innocent and defend its minister for the offensive remark.

The National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, also known as "Nana B," who also signed the petition, claimed that the comments made by the two most prominent NDC members could incite violence and jeopardize the nation's peace and stability.

Nana B therefore requests that the CID begin working on the petition right once as any further delay could pose a "great danger" to the nation.

The NPP is of the firm belief that such criminally reckless and treasonous commentary coming from John Dramani Mahama and Johnson Asiedu Nketiah portends great danger for the peace and stability of the State and also has the potential to incite their supporters to disturb the constitutional order by using some unconventional and extra-constitutional means of overthrowing a democratically elected government.

Today, April 12, 2023, the NPP Organiser presented the petition to the CID.
