Accra To Be Changed As Capital Of Ghana Soon

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a candidate for the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), believes Ghana's capital should be relocated from Accra due to the country's increasing population.

According to him, he submitted this suggestion to former President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2006, specifically during the country's bid to host the CAN 2008 and AU 2008 conferences.

"If I had my way, there is a place between Kintampo and Salaga; there is a large space very close to the Volta River that could be a prime location for the capital of Ghana; we could move the Jubilee House there; we could have built the new Tamale Stadium there."

As he continued his explanation, he stated that the AU structures in Cantonment could have been built there if it were a new capital with all the roads, avenues, and everything else properly planned; this is how a new human settlement is established.

Engineer Agyepong emphasized the need for Ghana to change its human settlement by stating, If you take Accra right now, it has to be regenerated, even the urban population; the way we live is not the best before God because our standard of living is very low, not in terms of money but just the way we live; the neatness of our surroundings, making sure the streets are properly laid when we're designing an area, if this is a church avenue, we should have a playground, this should be

"We must adhere to a plan, unlike the situation in Ghana. Today, you have mixed development, then they demolish a building and erect a church; we can ensure that all of these adhere to the necessary regulations and building plans.

As an illustration, he used Nigeria, where Lagos is the commercial capital and Abuja is the political capital.

When asked if the issue of relocating Ghana's capital should become a topical political issue, he stated that he would not promote it in order to obtain votes, but rather so that every Ghanaian feels a part of the country - Ghana. Why is a cocoa processing factory in Tema as opposed to, say, Hohoe or Sehwi?

Three years after the Tree Crops Authority was established, he questioned its impact on the nation.
