The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, began his campaign for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position on Sunday, June 18, 2023, addressing the party's delegates.

Dr. Bawumia stated, at one of his campaign events in Accra, that members of Alan Kyerematen's campaign team, including the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum, Frederick Opare Ansah, are joining his team because they believe he can lead the party to victory.

He added that he is the sole individual capable of uniting the NPP and leading it to victory in 2024. Additionally, he referred to former President John Agyekum Kufuor and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as his godfathers in the party.

"You are aware that I have defended this party and the candidate with the best chance of defeating the NDC and breaking into the top eight. I also serve as a unifier for this party. In this organization, I have two godfathers: President JA Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

"I can work with everyone in this party... as you know, Opare Ansah is present; he was Alan's former major operations director – major! major! Now he is with me. Kofi Jamasi. Is he not with me?

"Many (are with me now) because they are aware of my ambitious plan. I am interested in individuals who can aid the party, but I am indifferent to factionalism. I am a person who unites... I can deal with the elderly and the young, as well as with people from the north, east, south, and west. I have no faith in tribalism. "I can collaborate with Christians and Muslims," he declared.

For the position of NPP flagbearer, the vice president is expected to face stiff competition from former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen, Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and seven others.
