Martin Opare, 31, a chauffeur for Latex Foam Company's cashier, allegedly conspired with others to rob the company's daily sales.

The chauffeur and his alleged accomplices were arrested at dawn while planning a robbery at a restaurant located at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

On Monday, May 22, 2023, the accused appeared before an Accra Circuit Court presided over by His Honor Oheneba Kuffour.

Martin and his accomplices, Emmanuel Asante, 51, an auto mechanic, and Emmanuel Kofi Mensah Yeboah, 28, a trader, were each granted bond in the amount of GH100,000.00 with three sureties.

The court further ordered that prior to the execution of bail, the residences of both the accused and the sureties must be verified.

His Eminence Kuffour issued the order because the court lacked clarity regarding the accused individuals' adobe dwellings.

The defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and preparation to commit a crime, specifically robbery, in court.

They all entered not-guilty pleas and were brought before the court on Monday, May 22, 2023.

BRIEF FACTS:

Chief Inspector John Gohoho, the prosecuting officer, informed the court that the complainants were police officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Department of the Regional Headquarters in Accra.

He stated that Martin Opare was Millicent Tei's personal chauffeur at Latex Foam Ghana Limited.

However, approximately three months ago, Martin told the auto mechanic that Millicent had been transporting large sums of money daily from her workplace to the company's primary headquarters and that he could organize a gang to rob her.

Additionally, the auto mechanic asked the trader if he knew anyone who could assault and plunder Millicent.

Mensah also assured Asante that he could organize two or more men to steal Millicent Tei's share of the company's revenue.

To carry out the scheme, Mensah traveled to the Konkomba Market near Agbogbloshie and asked two witnesses in this case to assist him in robbing the Cashier.

The witnesses also pretended to be interested in the alleged conspiracy and reported it to the police.

Martin met Asante at his workplace at Avenor on May 5, 2023, to discuss the robbery.

On May 11, at approximately 12:40 p.m., the accused and two witnesses convened at the Las Palmas Food Joint at Circle in order to rob the Cashier.

The police arrested them while they were plotting the robbery.

During questioning, the suspects confessed in their cautioned statements that they intended to rob the Cashier in question.

The defendants have been charged and arraigned in court while the investigation continues.

The next scheduled hearing date is May 30.
