Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former minister of the environment, has described how former Speaker of Parliament Doe Adjaho and NDC Chairman Asiedu Nketia saved his life.

During his term as CEO of Korle-bu Teaching Hospital, he reportedly testified in front of a Parliamentary Audit Committee.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng recalled being brought before the committee for engaging in sole sourcing and avoiding specific procurement procedures.

The renowned surgeon and superintendent of the Cardiothoracic unit explained in an interview with Accra-based TV3 that his actions were motivated by the need to take desperate measures.

"I was panicked. I took this action because saving Korle-Bu required me to testify before the parliamentary audit committee.

"General Mosquito and Doe Adjaho were the two individuals who rescued me at that meeting. According to the members, I had completed the non-process. However, they questioned what he had done wrong and argued that he had saved the country a substantial sum of money, so he should be released even if the process was not ideal.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng revealed in an August 2007 press conference that he was able to stop questionable procurements and fraudulent contracts that were costing the country billions of cedis.

Before he took over, the hospital was paying 18 billion for sutures. However, he was able to obtain the same quantity from India for 450 million, saving the hospital and the country over 17 billion.

The former CEO stated that the hospital had previously paid $2.4 billion per year for CSSD cassettes, but he was able to acquire them for significantly less, and the hospital utilized them for three years.

The hospital, according to the cardiologist, was able to generate enough funds under his administration to construct a new administration building at a cost of $8.6 billion.
