John Boadu Defend NPP Party Leaders Supporting Candidates

The former general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party, John Boadu, has defended the practice of party leaders announcing their preference for a presidential candidate in advance of the upcoming primaries.

Mr. Boadu refuted social commentators' claims that such conduct is detrimental to the party.

According to Boadu, there is nothing inherently improper about a leader supporting a particular candidate as long as they do not violate the party's regulations.

Unless the party's guidelines prohibit it, he emphasized that it is permissible for leaders to expressly endorse a candidate.

Mr. Boadu clarified that only the specific rules and regulations of the party can preclude prominent members from publicly endorsing a candidate.

"What is wrong if the person is a leader, the rules and regulations don't prevent him from campaigning for one candidate or another, and his campaign does nothing but support his candidate?" he asked on the morning program Kokrokoo on Peace FM.

He considered it hypocritical to condemn the trend of executives, ministers, and other party leaders disclosing their preferred candidate for the party's primaries to party members.

"There are times when we must be brutally straightforward and eliminate some of this hypocrisy. He told his host, Kwami Sefa Kayi, "You see the Members of Parliament; every candidate worth their salt has gone to them individually seeking their support."
