A driver was incarcerated for swiping a motorcycle from an accident scene.
Emmanuel Kye, a 25-year-old driver, was sentenced to two years in prison by an Adentan Circuit Court officiated over by Mr. Isaac Addo for stealing a motorcycle he had previously helped remove from the scene of an accident.
The convicted individual returned to the site and claimed to be a relative of the accident victim sent to retrieve the motorcycle.
On April 25, 2023, the court sentenced him to two years in prison.
He pleaded guilty to the theft charge and implored the judge for mercy, but his pleadings were unsuccessful.
Chief Inspector Juliana Awuku stated that the complainant/accident victim was Clement Kojo, who resided in Dodowa, while the convicted individual resided in Accra's Adentan-Amanfrom.
Insp. Awuku stated that on February 12, 2023, the complainant, who desired to attend a church service in Pokuase, borrowed the aforementioned motorcycle from Richard in Dodowa.
The prosecutor stated that the complainant was involved in a head-on collision with a sedan when he reached Adentan-Mile 11 near the Mother Love Hospital.
The accident, according to the prosecutor, deposited the complainant and his motorcycle in a gutter, rendering him unconscious.
The convict, who was pedaling a bicycle along the same route, happened upon the accident scene and stopped to help clear the road.
The prosecutor stated that the defendant and the chauffeur drove the complainant to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The criminal then returned to the crime site, stole the motorcycle, and fled.
The prosecutor stated that police intelligence led to the convicted individual's arrest in Dodowa on April 20, 2023. During interrogation, the offender admitted to hijacking the motorcycle and selling it to one Nana in Madina, Zongo Junction for GH2,400.
Insp. Awuku added that the convict was charged and brought before the court after he was unable to direct the police to Nana.
