Meet an African Kingdom Palace built like a big snake with 2 giant heads

Before colonization, Africa's political institutions were based on monarchy, chieftaincy, and emperorship.

Approximately 225 kilometres northwest of modern-day Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, lies where the ancient kingdom of Bamum once stood.

Foumban Royal Palace, in the heart of the Noun Empire, was an absolute must-see for any traveller. The structure of the palace is its distinctive feature.

Construction on the Foumban Royal Palace, Bamum's formal residence as king, began that year. The design was conceived as a homage to the classic mythological picture of a gigantic serpent with two enormous heads. The two enormous teeth at the mouth of the serpent function as the doorway.

After the kingdom's demise, the Cameroonian government turned the palace into a museum to profit from its historical significance and attract visitors from all over the world.

Foumban Museum is home to ancient Bamum artefacts such as weaponry and wooden carvings.
