NDC Projected To Win 2024 Elections By Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)

Jonhson Asiedu Nketiah — Chairman of the National NDC

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) of the United Kingdom has predicted that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will likely win both the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2024.

A report published on Friday, April 28 indicated that the NDC had a strong possibility of winning the presidential election in 2024 and gaining legislative majority.

"Our baseline prediction is that economic difficulties, the fallout from debt restructuring, and weak governance will generate a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment and drive the electorate to seek change.

Therefore, the NDC has a strong possibility of winning the presidential election in 2024 and securing a legislative majority," it stated.

Report

Regardless of who assumed power, the report anticipated that Ghana's policy would continue to prioritize macroeconomic stability.

The report indicated that the new administration would confront the same economic obstacles as its predecessor.

The organization based in the United Kingdom also concentrated on the internal elections of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), where it anticipated fierce competition for the presidential nominations of both parties.

The report stated that the NDC could "choose to revitalize its prospects with a new candidate" such as former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, who was one of three candidates contending for the party's leadership.

The other two are former President John Dramani Mahama and former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Chief Executive Kojo Bonsu.

Reaction

Since the report's release, prominent members of both the NDC and the NPP have responded.

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer, and Dr. Clement Apaak, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South and ranking member on the Education Committee of Parliament, both stated in separate interviews that the NDC would not be complacent.

According to them, the party would "not go to sleep" but would continue to concentrate on its election-winning programs and initiatives.

Sammy Gyamfi indicated that the party was adhering to electoral strategies with a particular focus on polling stations.

Dr. Apaak, for his part, exhorted the NDC members to prove to Ghanaians that they were a superior alternative and not to place too much stock in the report.

"We must convince the decent people of Ghana that we are the superior option.

We must show them what we can do differently by highlighting the monumental failure of the current NPP government.

NPP

Richard Ahiagbah, director of communications for the NPP, urged Ghanaians to disregard the report in response.

He explained that the components and content of the research should be ingested in a manner that enables Ghanaians to comprehend the economic issues facing the nation.

Fuseini Issah, a former NPP MP for the Okaikwei North Constituency, stated that the NPP would use the report to maintain power.

According to him, given the state of the global economy, incumbent governments around the globe were not particularly popular.

"Today, no incumbent government expects to be popular enough to comfortably win elections.

"Events must transpire for an incumbent government to retain power," he stated.
