Permit Ofori-Atta to finish IMF negotiations – Akufo-Addo to NPP MPs asking his sacking

Before any resignation discussions, President Akufo-Addo has requested additional time for the struggling Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to finish negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to documents made available to news reporters, a $3 billion balance of payment support agreement with the IMF could be achieved in three weeks. The President worries that if Ken Ofori-Atta is fired or forced to resign, this could be disrupted.

This was the outcome of a meeting conducted last night between President Akufo-Addo and NPP Members of Parliament about the demand that the finance minister be fired due to his management of the economy.

Some NPP MPs claim that numerous attempts to get the administration to take action to help their constituents with the failing economy have been ineffective.

Thus, on Tuesday, October 2022, they convened a news conference to express their unhappiness and seek the resignation of Charles Adu Boahen, the Minister of State for the Ministry of Finance, and Ken Ofori-Atta.

The unhappy Majority MPs group's spokesperson and MP for Asante-Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, stated to the media on Tuesday that the dismissal of Ofori-Atta and Mr. Adu Boahen will assist boost trust in Ghana's economy.

Our caucus and our constituents are really concerned about the recent changes in the economy. We have communicated our significant concerns to our president via the parliamentary leadership and the party leadership, but we have not received a favorable answer," he stated.

However, because the MPs were dissatisfied, the meeting last night was unable to find a solution. They threatened to stop doing business with the government, but it's not clear if they will follow through.

In the meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo is still speaking with interest groups on the state of the economy. He is anticipated to interact with groups like the Ghana Employers Association, Market Women, Ghana Journalist Association, and the Forex Bureau Operators as well as the Trades Union Congress.
