Reason Why Ghana Revenue Authority Seized 3 Trucks Carrying Beverages Revealed

At Accra's Alajo, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized three trucks carrying soft beverages without tax stamps.

The authority stated that the actions of the proprietors of these beverages demonstrated that they violated tax laws and that they will be prosecuted accordingly.

The introduction of tax stamps began in 2018 with the intention of assisting the authority in charging the correct tax on locally manufactured and imported goods.

It was also intended to evaluate product quality on the Ghanaian market.

Kwabena Apaw, the chief revenue officer at the GRA, told Adom News that after less than five years since the introduction of the tax stamp, there are still individuals who are unwilling to affix the stamp to their products.

During the operation, some drinks that were confiscated had stamps that were not intended for their proprietors, indicating that they used stamps from other companies.

"In some instances, we observe importers and manufacturers using stamps we issued to other companies or importers on products that are not intended for their use, which is also illegal," Mr. Apaw explained.

The first lorry that was stopped contained 780 bottles of Guinness, 210 bottles of Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Sprite.

The remaining two buses were being inspected to determine the quantity of malt and other assorted beverages they carried.

Mr. Apaw added that after the quantity is verified, the owners will still be required to pay taxes on the items, and they will be turned over to the Criminal Investigations Department, which works in conjunction with the GRA to manage the criminal aspect.

When asked how those trucks made it to Accra before being impounded despite having men at the borders, he responded that an investigation will be conducted to determine how the vehicles crossed the borders, and whoever is discovered responsible will not be spared.
