The contest for National Democratic Congress parliamentary nominations preceding the 2024 general election will be resolved on May 13, 2023, assuming all other factors remain constant.

As Ghana is a signatory to the Affirmative Action objective of the United Nations, the fortunes of women contesting the parliamentary election are of great interest to numerous political observers.

Approximately six women are running for the NDC's parliamentary seat.

Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings is a second-term Korle Klottey Constituency member of parliament.

Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, her late father, was a former president of Ghana and the founder of the NDC.

Dr. Zanetor faces formidable opposition from rival Meredith Naakai Lamptey-Addy.

Meredith Naakai Lamptey-Addy

Meredith aspires to follow in the footsteps of her father, the stalwart party member David Lamptey.

Mr. Lamptey served as the NDC member of parliament for Korle Klottey between 1996 and 2000.

Meredith, who served as her father's personal assistant during his tenure as chief executive officer of the Sidalco group, Dominion Oil, and Radio and Television XYZ, will compete against Dr. Zanetor for the Korle Klottey NDC nomination.

She is the managing director of Patmeco Ghana Limited, Game Idol printing and advertising, and Worldwide Alliance Investment Limited, which she and her spouse also own.

Betty Krosbi Mensah

Betty Krosbi Mensah is the current representative for Afram Plains North. Her father, Krosbi Mensah, was the constituency's first representative.

Betty, who was elected to Congress for the first time in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, is seeking a third term.

Prior to her election to the House of Representatives, Mensah served as managing director of Best Pat Ghana Limited from 2013 to 2016. From 2009 to 2013, she also served as the second deputy coordinator for the National Youth Employment. From 2003 to 2005, Mensah was also the Gender and Development Coordinator for Ghana Cooperative Credit Union.

She is a member of the Gender and Children Committee and Health Committee in the current 8th Parliament.

Betty's sole opponent is Kperli Worlasi, a private attorney who was also her primary opponent in the 2018 election.

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo

Former Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo. She is a lawyer and an advocate for human rights. She is contesting in the Adentan Constituency.

The former minister is vying for the parliamentary nomination in one of the most competitive districts in the nation.

Her competitors in the race are the incumbent MP, Adamu Ramadan and another female, Linda Awuni.

Dorcas Affo-Toffey

Dorcas Affo-Toffey is the incumbent member of parliament for the Jomoro Constituency and is running for re-election in the 2020 parliamentary election.

Her first term in the legislature was anything but tranquil, as she spent roughly three years defending her eligibility to represent the people of Jomoro.

Affo-Toffey is on a second term mission after a court declared her the victor in the legal battle in which she was accused of not being a Ghanaian at the time she filed her nomination in 2020.

She is being contested by one Akatia Kwaido.

Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse

Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse challenged Felix Kwakye-Ofosu for the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese NDC ticket in 2018 ahead of the 2020 general election.

The two are back at it again in 2023 after the latter lost the race to the former in the 2018 contest.

Prof Ama Browne, an indigene of Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, is a senior lecturer at the Department of Physics of the University of Ghana.

She is an associate proffer of physics. She is currently a member of the Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data).

She previously worked as the Remote Sensing manager at the GIS and Climate Centre and as a senior research scientist at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.
