Step Down From Your Position And Concentrate On Your Health - NDC To West Ahanta MP

Due to his poor health, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ahanta West Constituency of the Western Region is demanding the resignation of the incumbent Member of Parliament, Ebenezer Kojo Kum.

In an open letter to the New Patriotic Party member of parliament, the NDC Ahanta West Communication Bureau expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of progress and development in the district during Kum's tenure.

They believe that his persistent illness has hindered his ability to perform his duties effectively.

The NDC emphasized the necessity of change and implored Kum to put his health first by resigning from his position.

It has been reported that Kum has been ill for nearly two years, although the precise nature of his condition is unknown.

Due to his health condition, he resigned as Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in February 2023.

However, he was reportedly transported to Accra a few months ago to cast a crucial vote for the New Patriotic Party in Parliament.

The NDC argued that if Kum was able to resign from his ministerial position due to ill health, he should do the same for his constituents who desire development.

They requested that he consider resigning from his position as member of parliament to enable for the constituency's much-needed progress and expansion.

They advised him to prioritize the welfare and advancement of his constituents over clinging to a position that no longer serves the people's best interests.

The party emphasized the significance of a new perspective and called for a candidate who can invigorate the constituency and more effectively address pressing issues.

They suggested that Kum's resignation would not only alleviate stress and put his health first, but also provide an opportunity for a by-election, allowing constituents to select a representative who can work toward attaining sustainable development.

Attorney Ebenezer Kojo Kum is presently serving his second term as the representative for Ahanta West. During his first tenure, he was in good health, but after the 2020 election, at the beginning of his second term, his health began to deteriorate.

Notably, no provision in Ghana's constitution requires or disqualifies a member of parliament from resigning due to ailing health.

Article 94 of the Constitution stipulates that an individual need only be of sound mind to hold an office. Consequently, a member of parliament may voluntarily resign due to ailing health.

A member may also be excused from service in the House or any committee, so long as they have obtained leave of absence, according to the standing orders of Parliament.

Resign and focus on your health, the NDC tells Kojo Kum; Ahanta West needs development.
