On May 14, 2023, the remains of the nine pupils who drowned after their boat capsized in the Wiaboman estuary have been laid to rest.

When the children's bodies were laid to rest in the Bortianor Palace Park, family and acquaintances of the deceased could not hold back their tears.

Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, who attended the interment, stated that a committee has been charged with investigating the incident and given two weeks to submit its findings.

He guaranteed that the findings will be implemented.

He gave each of the nine bereaved families GH10,000. He explained the quantity contributed by the two local assemblies and the local representatives.

He urged the families to put the money to good use.

The proprietors of Vision Redeemers Academy, one of the institutions that lost students in the disaster, are still in shock.

According to Reverend Joe Alfred Don, upon receiving the news of the children's deaths, the wife fainted.

He explained that he purchased a canoe to transport children to and from school, but on the day of the accident, the children did not use the larger school canoe, leading to the tragedy.

On May 10, nine pupils perished when the canoe they were traveling in capsized and they drowned at Faana in the Weija Gbawe municipality of Accra.

Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) criticized the Ghana Education Service (GES) for failing to provide life jackets to students residing on island communities when a similar incident occurred on January 25 at Atigagorrne/Wayokope and 8 students drowned.

Patrick K.B. Kumor, chief executive officer of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, subsequently revealed that a 12-year-old was paddling the canoe at the time of the accident.

Henry Quartey, Regional Minister for Greater Accra, is present.
