A private attorney, Martin Kpebu, has criticized the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, stating that Ghana needs an accomplished economist, not an investment banker, to address its economic problems.
Martin Kpebu stated that the minister is an investor who has been granted a position to implement economic policies despite knowing nothing about economic management.
Martin Kpebu stated on TV3's Key Points on Saturday, May 20: "Now is not the moment to experiment with investment bankers. We require skilled economists to address our economic problems."
His remarks follow the recent approval of a $3 billion bailout program by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"Ofori-Atta does not comprehend economics but insists he can do the job. What do you anticipate will occur if you're in government but not producing? he probed.
The IMF authorized Ghana's request for a $3 billion bailout program on May 17, 2023.
According to the government, the IMF programme aims, among other things, to restore macroeconomic stability and ensure debt sustainability.
