3.5 million Ghana Cards are stuck in a warehouse because of our debt - NIA Boss

The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA) has explained why his organisation hasn't been able to print Ghana Cards for some time.

Prof Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah said the NIA was having problems getting enough money.

He said even though there are cards and people who know how to print them, a private company involved in the arrangement is owed a lot of money, so they won't give the Ghana Cards to the NIA.

"Since August last year, we've had problems with money in the system," he said in an interview on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday. "Even though we have 3.5 million cards in a bonded warehouse, we can't check them because we don't have enough money."

About 2.5 million more cards need to be printed.

Prof Agyemang Attafuah also said that as of 19 February, more than 17 million people had registered with the NIA for the Ghana Card. But there are also 541,521 cards that haven't been printed yet.

We plan to give everyone a Ghana Card - NIA boss

Prof Attafuah said the remaining cards would be produced in six months.

He said this is because the government paid off some of its debts on Friday, so the NIA is hoping that "the cards will be released from next week".

"If the cards come out now, they can be printed in less than two weeks," he said.

A political scientist and fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-Ghana) has called for the National Identification Authority (NIA) to be given money to do its job.

Dr John Osae-Kwapong says this is because the Ghana Card is a very important to a every citizen in the country.

He said if the authority gets money, it will be able to make it easy for eligible voters to register for a Ghana Card.

"From what he said, it sounds like one of the biggest problems the NIA has had to deal with is lack of money. If that problem is solved, the authority shouldn't have much trouble registering people who come to them," he said.
