The Daily Guide has learnt that five people were seriously injured when residents, mostly youth, of the Zongo community in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region fought with suspected military guards on duty at the Asante Gold Corporation in the municipality.
It is not clear what caused the trouble at Bibiani Zongo in the Western North Region.
But sources say some people from the Zongo community went to the Asante Gold Corporation in the area and removed what they thought was gold-bearing ore, commonly called 'black'.
It was learnt that the military asked them to return the materials as they left the building, but the people refused and took the 'black' back to the community.
The DAILY GUIDE understands that military guards tracked down the people and confronted them in their neighbourhood, leading to a violent fight in which five people were injured.
The five injured are all recovering after being treated at the Bibiani Government Hospital.
Other sources say Asante Gold Corporation Bibiani is planning to move people from Bibiani Zongo and the old town to a place called Asikyire Nkwanta so that the company can use the zongo area for its operations.
But the young people were against the change.
So Richard Ebbah Obeng, the Regional Minister for the Western North, went to the resettlement site to talk to the farmers who own the land and other important people about compensation.
"But this bad thing happened just a few days after the visit," he said.
Abdallah Adams Mohammed, the Member of Parliament for Bibiani Zongo Constituency, said he had heard that one of the people who lived in Zongo had been shot.
He said that one of the injured people was in a critical condition, apparently because he had been shot.
He said that the regional police headquarters had intervened and that the area was more or less calm.
