Eight people were killed and four others were injured in a shooting at a birthday party in Gqeberha city, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
Two unidentified gunmen "randomly shot at attendees" who were dancing and mingling at a house party in Kwazakhele township, according to police.
Although a manhunt is ongoing, no one has been taken into custody.
Police reported that the owner of the attacked house was among the dead and injured, though they have not yet released their identities.
According to Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Nomthetheleli Lillian Mene, "These victims were slaughtered by criminals, and we will not rest until we discover out what happened and who was responsible for this callous and cold-blooded attack on these unsuspecting victims."
Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the shooting scene on Monday, January 30, and begged for the public's understanding while the investigation was proceeding.
He told reporters, "We know everyone is upset and would love it if we responded immediately, but we seek a little breathing room so that we do the work thoroughly.
Random mass shootings are uncommon, despite the United States having one of the highest rates of gun crime worldwide.
Last year, a string of shootings at various bars across the country resulted in the deaths of over 20 people. There are still open investigations involving those shootings.
