A midwife sold her land, car to fuel addiction – Dr. Daliri

Dr. Dennis Daliri, a specialist at Presbyterian Psychiatric Hospital in Bolgatanga, has issued a warning about the risks associated with unprofessional and uncontrolled drug usage.

He cautioned that a mere 14 days of pain medication or opioid use could result in addiction, which could severely impact the victim's life. Dr. Daliri emphasized that addictions that cause mental health disorders are indiscriminate, affecting anyone who avails themselves to such substances.

He observed that even health workers who know the dangers of these drugs often fall prey to their effects.

Dr. Daliri explained that substance abuse is prevalent among young people, often as a result of peer pressure or environmental factors, such as broken homes and child delinquency.

He recounted how some individuals were exposed to these substances at a young age, with some growing up in households where alcoholism was the norm. He went on to give an example of a midwife who sold her husband's car and a piece of land in Kumasi to fuel her addiction.

These issues came to light during Dr. Daliri's conversation with A1 Radio's Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show. He stressed that the consequences of addiction were severe, and it was crucial to exercise caution when using prescription drugs or opioids.

Dr. Daliri's warning comes at a time when substance abuse and addiction are on the rise worldwide, with devastating effects on the lives of those affected.
