Armed Sudanese Soldier Almost Shoots Ghanaian Student Showering in Bathroom

Rescue efforts to evacuate Ghanaians trapped in Sudan are underway, according to the Ghanaian government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has identified 76 Ghanaians currently in Sudan. 73 of them are students and three are footballers.

The president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, expressed his concern about the situation in Sudan and the anxiety among Ghanaian students, many of whom are located in the heart of the conflict in Khartoum.

One Ghanaian student in Sudan recounted to Larbi-Ampofo how an armed military man entered his bathroom while he was taking a shower, causing him great fear. The absence of the Ghanaian Embassy in Sudan has made it difficult for the students to mobilize, and finances are also a challenge to transport them to safety at the border towns.

Despite these difficulties, some 27 Ghanaian students have already moved from Sudan to the Ethiopian border town of Al-Gadarif.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that all the Ghanaian students they have identified are safe, but reports from Sudan suggest that they are living in fear. The power struggle in Sudan has resulted in heavy bombardment in the capital city, causing hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. Foreign students from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East are also trapped in Khartoum, a city of six million people.

The fighting has disrupted electricity, food, and water supplies, and many hospitals have been forced to close down. The UN has warned that up to 20,000 people, mostly women and children, have fled from Sudan to Chad to seek safety.
