Ashaiman brutalities: Respect men in uniform – Nitiwul

Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has urged people to show respect for those in uniform.

In a brief statement to journalists at Parliament on Thursday, he argued that such issues were inevitable in the quest to shape society, referring to the Ashaiman tragedy.

"I am going to plead with Ghanaians to show great respect for those in uniform. We will all benefit. But until the committee and I have visited the site on Thursday, I won't say anything. that we can decide for ourselves.”

"The fact that the investigation is still ongoing is one of the reasons why we are not going there now. We don't want to jeopardise the investigation," Nitiwul said.

However, Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee has questioned the military leadership over the brutality of some soldiers against civilians in Ashaiman.

To ensure peace with the people, the committee has decided to visit the community on Thursday with the Defence Minister and the military hierarchy.

In a statement to the media after the meeting, Kennedy Agyapong, the chairman of the committee, acknowledged the excesses committed by the deployed military personnel.

"On behalf of the committee, we wish to express our sympathy to the victims, the family of the young soldier and the bereaved. I heard that some of them knocked on the doors of their respective houses and when they came out, they were beaten.”

"I believe that as human beings, we have to admit that there were excesses, so we can sympathise with the people of Ashaiman. But we also sympathise with the Ghana Armed Forces because one of their own was killed by one of our law-breaking young men," Mr Agyapong said.

“But in a circumstance like this, all we can say is that we need peace," he continued. Members of the committee are forbidden from fomenting a rift by visiting the area and making statements that will upset the faction. Our aim is to bring peace to our country.
