Associating my ‘Akuffo’ Name to Akufo-Addo for Nepotism ‘Irritating’ — Ex CJ

Sophia Akuffo, the former Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, has said she doesn't like her name being associated with that of President Akufo-Addo in relation to nepotism.

Sophia Akuffo said on UpFront on JoyNews that when people associate her name with the President "as if I don't have merit or ability, it irritates me but I don't let it bother me".

The former Chief Justice said it "irritates" her when people talk about her as a family member of the President who made her Chief Justice.

The former chief justice also spoke about her "ideology".

"If you're going to insist on ideology - the sort of thing I thought was out of date after communism - I'll tell you what I think: I guess I could say I'm egalitarian," she said.

She said the late President John Rawlings put her on the Supreme Court soon after she started practicing law. Then President Kufuor put her on the African Court and President Akufo-Addo made her Chief Justice. She said she was 'friends with everybody and enemies with nobody'.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Office has said the Akufo-Addo government is being run by family and friends.

The party released the 6th edition of the Moment of Truth at the bureau. This is where the party has been talking about key issues of government and policy since 2018.

But Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo later said only two of his family members work for his government.

The President says all claims that he is running a government of family and friends are not true.

Nana Addo said Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, who is the Finance Minister of the Republic of Ghana, is a family member working in his government. "My cousin is Mr Ken Ofori-Atta." He also said Amoako-Atta, who is in charge of roads, was related to him.
