Barker-Vormawor to sue military for 'kidnapping' in Ashaiman

Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, has said he will write to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) about the "violations" of people's rights in Ashaiman by some soldiers on Thursday 9 March.

Although allegedly sanctioned by the military high command, he claimed that what the soldiers did in Ashaiman was a threat to Ghana's democracy.

According to him, the alleged arrest of 184 citizens by the military during last Tuesday's raid can only amount to kidnapping.

He would therefore offer legal aid to any local who was a victim of military brutality.

They claim that this is a result of intelligence.

Even if the Commander-in-Chief refuses to act, I will ask him to release these people quickly if he has any respect for the remaining parts of this democracy and for himself.

As we have taken the responsibility and the course to provide legal representation to all the victims involved, I will write to them.

On 8 March, Mr Barker-Vormawor was on TV3's Ghana Tonight programme.

His response comes a day after the military high command approved an intelligence operation to find those responsible for the brutal killing of a 21-year-old military officer.

Imoro Sherrif was fatally stabbed in the early hours of 4 March.

Volunteers will be deployed in the town from Thursday to Saturday to gather information to prepare a case against the military, similar to the Ejura case in 2021, according to Mr Barker-Vormawor, whose treason case was heard in an Ashaiman court.

"We are going to take legal action against the Ghana Armed Forces for what they have done," the statement added.
