Black Stars forward Christian Atsu, who plays for Hatayspor in Turkey, is among thousands of people still trapped under the rubble of Monday morning's devastating earthquake in the country, according to several Turkish media reports.

Search and rescue teams are searching for the 30-year-old and Taner Savut, the director of the club he plays for.

Atsu played for the club at the weekend when they beat Kasimpasa in the Turkish top flight. The Ghanaian scored the only goal in the match, which the club won.

In the early hours of Monday morning, a powerful earthquake struck south-eastern Turkey, near the border with Syria. It killed more than 1,000 people in their sleep and trapped many others.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck near the city of Gaziantep at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles).

A second 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province hours later.

More than 900 people have been killed so far in Turkey and 500 in Syria.

After playing for a while in Saudi Arabia, the 30-year-old Black Star signed a one-year contract with the Turkish team in September last year.

A Turkish journalist told Joy Sports: "There was a big earthquake in Turkey last night. It measured 7.7 on the Richter scale and 11 cities were affected. Hatay, in the south of the country, was one of them.

"Two footballers from Hatayspor were pulled out of the rubble, but Christian Atsu is thought to be still under the rubble in Hatay city. He scored a goal in the team's last game on Sunday, but today's news is that Atsu can't be found and rescue teams are currently searching for him.”
