Boat Accident: Suspect Remanded

The main suspect in last weekend's boat disaster has been remanded in custody by the Ada District Court presided over by Paulina Kwakyewaa.

The suspect did not enter a plea. On Tuesday 21 March, no charges were read in court and no evidence was presented.

According to Detective Inspector Alex Annan, who testified before the court, since the case involved deaths and the families of the deceased were still upset, the court should remand the accused in police custody for his safety and to allow for further investigations.

After hearing from the prosecution, the magistrate remanded the suspect in custody and adjourned the case to 5 April 2023.

Five people were confirmed dead after the boat capsized on Lake Volta while transporting mourners from Azizanya to Azizakope, and a number of others are still missing.

Following the incident, local assemblyman Daniel Adzakpa told TV3 that the boat was overcrowded.

There were more than 60 people on board the boat, which was only designed to hold 25.

Other survivors claim that they informed Gabriel Ajigodi of the overcrowding and begged him to take them back to where they had boarded.

Mary Donuki, 22, told TV3's Joseph Armstrong on Saturday that they asked to be taken back to Azizanya when they realised the load was too heavy.

The sailor reportedly ignored their cries and promised to take them safely to Azizakpe.

But disaster struck halfway through the voyage.
