British Expat Drowns In Jet Ski Tragedy On Ghana Lake

An inquest heard today that a British man who was living in Ghana died when he fell off a jet-ski and into a river.

Iwan Gwyn, a married 49-year-old quantity surveyor from Pontllyfni, died on December 30 while spending time with friends and family in Africa, where he had lived. The coroner, Sarah Riley, said that Gwyn had been living there.

Gwyn's family noticed that they couldn't see him while he was jet-skiing on the Volta River in Alorkpem around 6 p.m.

After a few hours, fishermen found his body. They called the police, who took Gwyn to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death was given as "asphyxiation or drowning and a blow to the head."

The coroner in Caernarfon said that it seemed like Iwan fell from the jetski without anyone seeing it. "After it happened, he probably hit his head,"

Gwyn is 49 years old and is from the Welsh village of Llanaelhaearn. He has lived in Ghana for more than nine years.

"The person died because they drowned. Riley told the Daily Post that Iwan was spending time with friends and family when he went out on his jetski.

He died on December 30, and the investigation into what happened took almost a year.

"After a while, they realized they couldn't see Iwan anymore. A few hours later, some local fishermen found him unresponsive.

He fell off the jet ski, and no one saw it happen. He hit his head during or after the fall.

"His death came as a surprise and was not planned. I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Gwyn died by accident."

His brother Dafydd said, "The family would like to thank everyone who has reached out to show their sympathy during this very sad time."

'Fydd colled enfawr ar ei ol', he said, Welsh for: 'He will be greatly missed'.
