First canopy walkway in Volta Region opens

The Ote waterfall in the valleys of Amedzofe in the Ho West District now boasts the first canopy walkway in the Volta Region.

The opening came after the conclusion of a multi-phased ecotourism project launched by the non-governmental organization Herp Conservation Ghana (NGO).

A Onepone Endangered Species Refuge was established as part of the project, which also included two canopy walkways that rewarded a charming descent of the 290 steps with an even more charming up-close view of the waterfall.

With this new development, there are now five canopy walkways in the nation, including Kakum in the Central region's Assin South District, Bunso in the Eastern region, and the Legon Botanical Gardens walkway in Greater Accra.

As one passed beneath the waterfall, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, who inaugurated the facility and took the first symbolic stroll on the canopy, spoke of "showers of blessings."

According to locals, development plans for the falls started in 1886 with the entrance of German settlers, who carved out the first set of stairs leading down to the basin.

The onepone, a once-extinct species of frog, has been found to be flourishing in the area, and the waterfall is located further into the community of Gbadzeme.

The regional minister promised that the government would give the facility the support it needs to last and develop further.
