Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo joins picketing pensioners against DDEP

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo was seen at the Ministry of Finance where some pensioners are picketing to get out of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

Since Monday 6 February, the pensioners have been picketing the Ministry in an attempt to get out of the programme.

The new deadline for those who want to enter the programme on their own is Friday 9 February, after the Ministry granted another extension on Tuesday 7 February.

The government has already reached agreements with banks, insurance companies and securities firms to join the programme. This is part of the country's efforts to restructure its debt before the International Monetary Fund (IMF) gives it more money.

The government had promised all active workers that their pension funds would not be affected by the programme, but its revised memorandum is said to include pension funds.

Most pensioners say the bonds they have with the government are the only way they can make a living. They have worked hard to save these funds.

Because the government doesn't seem to care what they want, they have started a protest where they go to the Ministry of Finance every day between 10 and 11 am to press their case.

Sophia Akuffo, who used to be Chief Justice, held a sign in support of the elderly.
