Ghana has a ‘small spiritual problem’ – Sefa Kayi expresses disappointment

Broadcaster Kwami Sefa Kayi says Ghana's problems are spiritual and he is disappointed that students are being punished for speaking their local languages in school.

The host of Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo' couldn't understand why the tradition still continues when he spoke about the use of Ghanaian languages to teach in schools and to stop beating pupils who speak Twi.

Mr Sefa Kayi was shocked to find out through his research that there is a department called "The Bureau of Ghana Languages" that was set up to promote Ghanaian languages, but no one knows about it and little to no work is being done to promote the use of local languages in teaching and learning in schools.

“The Vernacular Literature Board Ordinance (27) of 1951 established the Bureau of Ghana Languages.

The Vernacular Literature Board Dissolution Act of 1958 made the Bureau of Ghana Languages a department under the Ministry of Information.

Later, in 1963, it was transferred to the Ministry of Education. Since the passage of the National Commission on Culture Act, 1990 (PNDC Act 238), the Bureau of Ghana Languages, formerly known as the Vernacular Literature Bureau, has been part of the National Commission on Culture.

As of 2017, the executive instrument that established the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture made the Bureau of Ghana Languages part of the ministry.

The purpose of the Bureau of Ghana Languages is to preserve Ghanaian languages and culture through publication, certification and the use of world-class systems, technology and collaboration with local and international partners," he said.

"Ghana really has a problem, I think it has to do with religion,” he said at the end.
