As per a report by Ghana Business News, the Investigative Unit of Al Jazeera carried out an undercover investigation into gold smuggling in Africa, and in the last episode, one of the central figures, Alistair Mathias, referred to as a Financial Architect by the undercover reporters, revealed to them that he has a close relationship with the President of Ghana, who also acted as his lawyer.
Mathias, who claims to have been the most prominent player in the Ghanaian gold industry, disclosed to the reporters that he used to extract between $40 million and $60 million worth of gold every month from Ghana. The investigative team uncovered that one of the firms Mathias employs for gold exportation is Guldrest Resources, which is based in Ghana and documented in the FinCEN Files. However, the company's offices were untraceable during the FinCEN Files probe in 2020, despite its membership in the Chamber of Bullion Traders Ghana.
Mathias further revealed that he is acquainted with several African presidents, including the presidents of Zambia, the DRC, and South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa, who he considers a friend. He also stated that the Zimbabwean president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is his business partner, but due to his sanctions, he cannot publicly disclose it.
Ewan Macmillan, also known as Mr. Gold, mentioned that he knows Mnangagwa personally and calls him "ED." Macmillan claims to have spoken with him only three months before the interview with the undercover reporters.
