In Benue State, a 40-year-old housewife named Charity Upev and her son Tertsea have been remanded in custody for allegedly killing their in-law, Fanen, by beating him to death over meat.

Charity and her son have been charged by police with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Roseline Iyorshe of Makurdi? The court dismissed her plea, adjourned the matter to 8 February and sent her the case file.

The Divisional Police Officer of "E" Division Police Station in Makurdi received information that Charity and her son had assaulted Fanen, her in-law who was staying with her, on 24 January. This information was earlier presented to the court by the prosecutor, Inspector Jonah Uletu.

According to the prosecutor, Charity claimed that her mother-in-law had stolen meat from her soup pot.

According to the police, Fanen was knocked unconscious after the beating and taken to hospital where he was treated but died.

The prosecutor alleged that the act contravened Sections 97 and 222 of the Benue Criminal Law of 2004.
