‘I Will Die A Hero’ — Court Sentences Kano Cleric To Death For Blasphemy

A cleric named Abduljabbar Nasiru-Kabara was found guilty of blasphemy by a Kano Upper Shari'a court.

Nasiru-Kabara was charged because he was said to have said bad things about the Prophet Muhammad.

The Kano state government brought the charges against him.

The prosecutor, Suraj Sa'eda, said that the crime was committed on August 10, October 25, and December 20, 2019.

In his ruling on Thursday, the presiding judge, Ibrahim Sarki Yola, said, "I am convinced that the prosecution counsel did their job and proved their points beyond a reasonable doubt."

Before giving the sentence, the judge asked the person on trial if he or she had anything to say.

The defense lawyer, Aminu Abubakar, then asked the court to be kind to the accused person, saying that he did what he did out of ignorance.

But the cleric spoke up and said he didn't know the lawyer.

"I've never met him. I'm meeting him for the first time. He shouldn't be able to talk about me. "I can speak for myself, and I should be able to," he said.

Abduljabbar then said, "My lord, after hearing how you twisted all my evidence and turned all my arguments on their heads, you have given me words that I have never said."

"Deliver your judgement, and I am not asking for leniency at all. I want all of my followers to know that I will die as a hero, and I don't want you (Judge Ibrahim Sarki Yola) to do me a favor or let me off easy. This is all I have to say. Assalamu Alaikum."

The prisoner was then given a death sentence by hanging.
