“I wanted my son to play for Cameroon, but they charged money I didn’t have” - Mbappe’s father

Before the World Cup 2022 finals between France and Argentina, people on the internet have talked a lot about the players France chose for the FIFA World Cups in 2018 and 2022. When it came out that about half of the best players on France's national team were of African descent, it became a big deal.

In order to find out more about why these players choose to play for teams outside of Africa, however, some things have come to light. In all honesty, it's not all these players' faults. Corruption is rife in Africa when it comes to national team call-ups, and merits are not taken into account.

Kylian Mbappé's father told the media everything that happened, which made it so that his son had to play for France instead of Cameroon.

Mbappe was born in Paris. His father, Wilfried, is from Cameroon, and his mother is from Algeria. But he tried to play for the senior national team of the country in Central Africa where his father was born.

Wilfried said in 2018 that a member of the Cameroon Football Federation asked Kylian Mbappé for money before he could join the Cameroon Indomitable Lions team.

The father of the PSG striker said that the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) had missed an opportunity to sign Kylian Mbappé because they were too lazy and too greedy.

"At first, I wanted my son to play for Cameroon, but someone at the Cameroon Football Federation charged me money that I didn't have. He told Cameroon Concord News that the French didn't charge anything.

He also said that being on the national team is an honor, and Kylian's father thinks that players shouldn't get paid to play for their country. Kylian Mbappe also agreed with his father's claim that the Cameroon National Team was corrupt when he said;

"I'm not from Cameroon. I am French. At the start of my career, when I was still a nobody, my father asked Fecafoot to put me on the Cameroon National team. However, we had to pay a lot of money to get on the team. My father was so upset that he went to France. And France gave me the chance to prove myself."

"Cameroon is calling me today, and they're giving me a citizenship that isn't mine. "I'm French and I'll stay French," said a man who experts think will be one of the best players of the next ten years.

The facts show that there is a lot of corruption in Africa when it comes to putting people on national teams.
