Illicit Aphrodisiacs and Body Enhancers Seized in Kumasi by FDA

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) recently conducted a market surveillance exercise in the Ashanti Region, resulting in the seizure of unregistered herbal and orthodox medical products worth GH₵700,000 in Kumasi.

The seized illegal pharmaceuticals, which included body enhancement products, were sourced from a single retail shop in the Alabar Market, a notorious hub for the sale of unwholesome herbal products and drugs.

The confiscated items consisted of a range of aphrodisiacs, unregistered herbal products, orthodox pain relievers, and cosmetics, some of which had inscriptions in unknown languages, while others were conspicuously sourced from the US.

John Laryea Oddai Tettey, the Ashanti Regional Head of the FDA, revealed that the products were a combination of indigenous and exotic consumables, adding that the Authority would never approve them.

He expressed concern over the ease with which smugglers managed to infiltrate the market with these products, but assured the public that the FDA was committed to rooting out perpetrators of such illegal activities.

The seized products will be destroyed through incineration, as they pose a serious threat to public health. The FDA is also partnering with relevant stakeholders to combat the proliferation of unwholesome products on social media platforms, which is becoming increasingly prevalent.

John Laryea Tettey advised the public to shun unregistered products and rather visit hospitals or licensed chemical shops for prescription medications. The Communication Directorate of the Authority is collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken to eliminate these unscrupulous marketers.

The FDA is mapping the entire region to clamp down on the sale of illegal pharmaceuticals and warns that those involved in these illegal trades will face the full force of the law. Three individuals have already been arrested and arraigned for similar offenses.
